Burning Calories with Your Hobbies

In addition to your regular workouts at the Workout Anytime Chatsworth club, lots of your fellow club members are burning calories and having fun with their hobbies. Kayaking, Canoeing, SUP (Stand up Paddleboards), Wave Runners, Surfing, Hunting, Fishing, Mountain Biking and more! The great news is anytime you can add an extra workout to your normal routine, you are accelerating your fitness results. We’ll give you a sense of the calories you can burn with some of the above popular hobbies and what you can do with your workouts to enhance the results you can get outside the club. Kayaking is becoming a huge recreation sport, particularly with women with over 60% of new Kayakers being women. In addition to offering fun and peace of mind by being on the water, kayaking is a great workout. It combines cardiovascular and strength, burning 300-400 calories per hour depending on the intensity. Your total body workouts in the gym will help as you are working abs/core, legs/hips, shoulders, arms, and chest. You can buy a beginner kayak at any of the big box stores for under $200. Just make sure you have the correct vehicle/racks to haul your kayak. Fantastic hobby, great health benefits with low cost of entry! Mountain Biking Biking is a fantastic cardio workout. You can burn about 400-500 calories an hour. Mountain biking is more involved because you have to navigate different terrains. It's more of a total-body workout than biking on the road, which is primarily a cardio workout. The major muscle groups that are used, and toned during a cycling workout: Calves, thighs, hamstrings and quadriceps, gluts/buttocks, biceps, and triceps, shoulders. Mountain biking has some risks as you are riding up and down hills on uneven surfaces. You’ll also need some protective gear including a helmet, eye protection, gloves and the correct type of biking shoes, hydration pack, and padded shorts. A first aid kit and bicycle repair kit also are important items to have. The cost of a beginner’s mountain bike can be under $200 but you could easily spend over $500 for a decent mountain bike. Mountain biking is a fun and exciting recreational sport; just take it slow while you are learning the ropes and be safe! SUP (Stand Up Paddleboards) What’s all the SUP hype about? Well, it has more 1st time participants than any other sport!  Plus it’s a low impact sport, perfect for all fitness levels and ages. Some benefits of Stand-Up Paddle Boarding are: It’s a great cardio workout, a good way to burn calories while enjoying the peace and tranquility of being outdoors, burning anywhere from 300-600 calories per hour, depending on the type of SUP activity you are doing. (Touring, paddleboard surfing or just pure recreational). SUP is a great total body workout using strength, core, and endurance. SUP boards can cost anywhere from $400-$3,500. Also, Inflatables are becoming popular, they are easy to transport locally or on vacations. Some SUPS are now outfitted for fishing!
