Workout Anytime recently hosted a free clinic at Udall Park focused on preventing common pickleball injuries. The event provided valuable insights for players of all levels on how to stay injury-free while enjoying the sport. Coach Dave, an experienced trainer at Workout Anytime, led the session and demonstrated several mobility exercises designed to improve flexibility, strength, and range of motion. One key tool he emphasized for injury prevention was the use of resistance bands. These bands are excellent for strengthening muscles, improving joint stability, and increasing flexibility, especially for areas like the shoulders, knees, and ankles, which are highly susceptible to strain in pickleball.

Owner Jason Lobaugh also shared his expertise during the clinic, highlighting the most common injuries in pickleball, particularly knee and ankle injuries. As Jason explained, the fast lateral movements, sudden stops, and twists involved in the sport put a lot of strain on these areas. He stressed that incorporating resistance band exercises into warm-up routines can help build the necessary muscle strength and mobility to avoid these injuries.

Linda Tom, a seasoned pickleball player and clinic participant, agreed with the importance of warming up and using resistance bands. "This clinic is well-needed," she said. Linda, who has experienced her share of injuries while playing, added, “I've hurt my wrist, fallen back, and hit my head. Just recently, I fell back and hit the wire fence, injuring my wrist and back.” That’s why she signed up for the clinic—she knows firsthand the importance of injury prevention.

The clinic also included an in-depth demonstration of resistance band exercises for warming up. These exercises help target key muscle groups and increase flexibility, giving players the strength and mobility they need to prevent injuries. As Jason Lobaugh noted, “Ankle and knee injuries are a big part of pickleball. We're teaching them how to prevent those things with exercises that make a real difference.”

The clinic was an invaluable reminder for all attendees that a little extra preparation can go a long way in reducing the risk of injury, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable pickleball experience. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner, proper warm-up techniques and mobility exercises are essential to keeping your body strong and injury-free.
